Joe Ryan

Joe Ryan’s work involves researching and photographing source material for etchings from the large number of abandoned institutions in Ireland such as: Magdalene laundries, asylums, tuberculosis sanatoriums, workhouses and industrial schools.

Some of these buildings still have fittings intact, medical apparatus, bed frames, wheelchairs, or in some rooms the personal effects of the last residents or inmates before closing down, giving the buildings a more sinister or ghostly atmosphere.

In other buildings vegetation such as ivy and briars have grown over the structures giving a more organic appearance especially in the case of briars creating a natural form of barbed wire.
